A Candle to the Sun
Keith M. Roberts, copyright 1972 - 2016.
As you walked through the door
with that look in your eyes,
I could see it was a time for a change.
Like the gray clouds that sail
over October skies,
autumn never seemed this strange.
And we spoke of tomorrow
as something we would share;
as if I would be there when it came.
Now you see I finally gotten thruogh the pain.
Distance makes you older.
Years will make you wise.
Loving puts the light behind
your hundred-year-old eyes.
Trusting leaves you lovelier.
Fear leaves you undone.
To this design my love will shine
a candle to the sun.
As you stepped from the curb
with good-bye on your face,
you were looking back to see if I was there.
And the smile of smiles
that no time would erase
came dancing through the cool crystal air.
And we spoke of tomorrow
as something we would share;
as if I would be there when it came.
Now you see I finally gotten through the pain.
Hello is for lovers.
Good-bye is for friends.
Don't you see, you're both to me;
I'm burning at both ends.
Trusting leaves you lovelier.
Fear leaves you undone.
To this design my love will shine
a candle to the sun.
